Howard "Howie" Breinig is one of Tucson's most celebrated football coaches. After playing football for the University of Arizona for 3 years Coach Breinig spent the rest of his career teaching the game to the young men of Tucson. Breinig's Sahuaro Cougars were the State 4A football Co-Champions in 1994. Three other Sahuaro teams under Breinig were State Runners-Up. Howard was the U of A intramural heavyweight wrestling champion and then he coached Sahuaro to the 1972 5A State Wrestling Championship. Coach worked at Rincon, Tucson, Sahuaro, Sabino, and Sunnyside High Schools all in the Tucson area. Breinig was the president of the Arizona Coaches Association for 2 years and vice-president for 3 years. Coach Breinig was inducted into the Pima County Sports Hall of Fame in 2007.
