Cranston began his 31 year head coaching career at Winslow High School in 1970 where he coached the Bulldogs for 11 years. Hysong was also a head coach at both Tolleson and Westview for 10 years each. Coach Hysong's teams won over 271 track meets and won over 60% of them overall. Cranny's track teams have won 5 Arizona State Championships, placed second 4 times, and were region champions 9 times. The Arizona Interscholastic Association named Coach Hysong the 3A North Track Coach of the Year on three occasions. Coach Hysong was named the Region 8 Coach of the Year by the National High School Athletic Coaches Association in 1979. Coach Hysong has been a familiar figure at many of the Arizona State level track meets as a coach, judge and administrator for the last 40 plus years. Hysong still assists his wife Sue at Westview High School and coaches the Pole Vaulters at Glendatle Community College. Coach had the extreme pleasure of coaching his son, Nick, to the Gold Medal in the Pole Vault in the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney, Australia. Sue Hysong, Cranny's wife and Nick's mother, was also selected to enter the Arizona Coach's Hall of Fame in 2020 making them the only married couple to both be honored by their peers. Coach Hysong died on Monday, June 6, 2021 in Phoenix after a long illness.
