Coach Shaffer is currently serving on the Executive Board of the AHSACHOF as the annual banquet ceremony chairman. Doug coached football at Scottsdale Horizon from its beginnings (1980) to the present. Doug formally retired from the Varsity program in 2002. He has continued to coach Freshman Football at Horizon ever since. His 1994 team was the 5A State Champion and his 1995 team was the runner-up. Doug and his wife Becky are natives of Western Pennsylvania. Shaffer was honored with the National Football Foundation Frank Kush Achievement Award. Their son, Derek, played football for Dad in 1998 and 99. Coach Shaffer will be honored in the summer of 2017 by being inducted into the National High School Athletic Coaches Hall of Fame.
