Dave began his 23 year head coaching career in Arizona at Phoenix Central High School in 1968. He coached the Bobcats for 20 years before resigning his coaching duties in 1987 when named Central High School Principal. He retired from full time administrative duties in 1994 but came out of reitrement in 1997 when asked to coach the Shadow Mountain High raqueteers. His teams posted an overall record of 271 wins for a winning percentage just shy of 90%, had consecutive dual match undefeated seasons from 1969 through 1982, were region champions 15 times, won the state title twice and were state runners-up three times. He was named the Arizona Coach of the Year, and the Region 8 Coach of the Year by the National High School Athletic Coaches' Association in 1976 and 1986. He has served as the AIA Region and/or State Tennis Tournament Director on numerous occasions, and as the State, Region, or National Tennis Chair for the NHSACA. Dave was also the director of the USTA Winter Nationals Tournament held annually in Phoenix. Coach has been a featured speaker at regional, and national clinics and conventions. In the late 70's Dave was instrumental in negotiating the first school district level coaching contract that provided guaranteed benefits, salaries, protection from arbitrary and/or capricious treatment, and equal coaching pay for male and female athletic programs. These type contracts are now standard throughout the state. Coach Silcox was elected to the Phoenix Union High School District Governing Board in 1996 and served as its president in 2003 and 2004. Dave has been inducted into the Central High School Sports Wall of Fame (2007), the NHSACA (National) Hall of Fame (2015), and the Phoenix Union District Sports Hall of Fame (2017). Dave is continuing to give back to his profession as he is serving as the Executive Secretary to the AHSACHOF.
