Ed Nymeyer
Inducted: 1996
Sport: Boys’ and Girls’ Basketball
School: Flowing Wells
Ed Nymeyer coached basketball and taught PE at Flowing Wells High School winning state titles in 1963 and 1968. His 1969 team was the state runner-up. Coach Nymeyer came back later in his career and led the Flowing Wells girls to a state runner-up in 1985. Coach Nymeyer caused quite a stir with the officials when he was creative with uniform design. He once used Roman numerals on the jerseys and the rulebook was changed to say "Arabic" numerals. The officials had trouble making X's and V's with their fingers to the score table. Nymeyer also came out with poncho warmups (FW is the Caballeros) and long tailed sock hats like the "Cat in the Hat". Both of those warmup devices had to be changed because the kids couldn't make their layups in warmups. Coach Nymeyer has the distinction of winning over 300 games in two different sports, basketball and volleyball. Ed Nymeyer led the U of A Wildcats in scoring for 4 straight years as a student/athlete and was the last person to letter in 3 varsity sports basketball, golf, and track. Coach Nymeyer was inducted into the Pima County Sports Hall of Fame in 1995.
