Garye LaFevers, as been involved in baseball in Arizona for 40 years. A 6-time
region coach of the year, he was selected as both the 2A Coach of the Year and the
Arizona Coaches Association’s “Arizona Coach of the Year” in 1997.” In 2008,
LaFevers was named the American Baseball Coaches Association’s High School
Division 1 “National Coach of the Year.” While serving as the head coach at 3 different
programs, his teams appeared in 2 state championships, Buckeye Union (the 3A State
Runner-ups in 1990) and the Hayden Lobos (2A State Championship in 1997).
Following 6 years at Mesa Skyline, LaFevers became the Associate Head Coach at
Chaparral High School assisting the Firebirds to 2 state championships in his 3 years
there. Chairing the Baseball Advisory Committee for the Arizona Interscholastic
Association for the past 10 years, he helped in establishing the Pitch Smart Guidelines
in Arizona.
LaFevers was involved with USA Baseball for 10 years and coached on 6
national teams. For his efforts, LaFevers was named the “Developmental Coach of the
Year” by the United States Olympic Committee and the “Coach of the Year” by the Pan-
American Baseball Confederation. LaFevers co-authored the NFHS educational course
on baseball for USA Baseball.
Since January of 2005, he has been the President of the Arizona Baseball
Coaches Association and was elected to the AzBCA Hall of Fame in 2007. Additionally,
he served the Director of the Sun Belt Team after serving as the head coach for both
the junior and senior teams and was honored for his contributions to the tournament
with induction into Sun Belt Tournament Hall of Fame in 2014.
In 2022, he was elected to the National High School Baseball Coaches
Association Hall of Fame after serving on the executive board two different times
representing Region 7, presenting at two national conventions and was the president of
the NHSBCA in 2009.
