After an outstanding high school career as hurdler and 440 yarder at Camp Verde and ASU, Walter began teaching and coaching at Bisbee High School in 1966, first as an assistant track coach from 1969 through 1982 and then as head coach from 1983 through today. During his amazing 47 year career, his boys and girls teams have won 14 state championships, were state runners-up eight times and captured 22 region titles. He has coached 83 boys individual state champions and 23 individual girls state champions. The Arizona Track Coaches’ Association honored him as State Track Coach of the Year in 1986 and he has been named Region Coach of the Year six times. Walter is a man of many talents. He also coached boys and girls cross country for six years and boys wrestling for a combined 33 years. His cross country teams won seven region titles, were state runners-up once and his wrestlers won three region titles. Walter has received numerous accolades for his commitment to high school athletics, but one is particularly meaningful to him, the Arizona Coaches’ Association’s prestigious ‘You Paved the Way’ award.
