Jerry Loper was a highly successful football coach at Antelope, Tucson Amphitheater, Mesa Westwood, and Chandler High Schools. Coach Loper's 1975 Amphi Panthers bested Maryvale by 1 point for the State Title. Loper moved to the East Valley and his Westwood Warriors won the State Title in 1988. The Warriors were the State Runners-Up in 1989. Coach was selected the Coach of the Year in 1975 and 1988. Coach Loper led many off-season clinics for his fellow coaches and was instrumental in the coaches association and the All-Star games. Jerry Loper was killed by a drunk driver in 1996. He had been coaching Arizona youth for 33 consecutive years. The sports complex at Westwood High School and the stadium at Hamilton High School now bear the Loper name.
